Although it lacks specific detail, the site's cheerful assurance that the tens of thousands of Chinese characters actually arise from a relatively small inventory of basic radicals makes its suggestion seem quite plausible that, even if we never speak Mandarin, it's entirely possible to read it. The website features three content areas, which provide visitors with service and pricing information on Dial-up and leased line access, Virtual web hosting, and Dedicated hosting and server colocation. ISPcheck is unique among existing online resources in that its coverage is not limited to a single service type or any given geographic region. "This is the first complete guide to Internet access and presence products," says Dmitri Eroshenko, CEO of Infotonic Interactive. "The site includes service plans ranging from courier pigeons to T3. You can find what you need in any US area code in under 10 seconds." Work is underway to expand coverage to international locations. The site's information-packed interface delivers content in a concise, spreadsheet-like format. Users filter, sort and compare services by parameters such as location, platform, bandwidth and pricing. This convenient access to information not only enables consumers to make intelligent purchasing decisions, but offers service providers a powerful market research tool. More than 1,500 Internet service and presence providers participated in ISPcheck's beta phase. "The most common reaction has been "Finally!", "according to Isabel Wang, VP Marketing. "It seems this is the type of resource ISPs have been looking for all along." ISPs are particularly enthused about the active role they play on the site. Providers have direct control over their service plan listings, which they can edit in real time. Many smaller providers also feel ISPcheck could be an invaluable marketing tool. The site's search functions enable them to capture a broader audience on the sole basis of competitive service offerings. ISPcheck's services are free to both consumers and service providers. The site's operations are supported by advertising. Several enhancements to ISPcheck's services are currently under development, including an interactive feedback system which will allow consumers to rate service providers. Infotonic Interactive is a Washington, DC-based start- up specializing in online content creation and inf formation distribution. ********************** History Channel Traveler http://www.historytravel.com The History Channel Traveler is your online guide to historic travel across the U.S. This page will show you how to use their guide to find the historic sites, lodging and events you want to see. There are also many other options and programs that allow one to file tax returns electronically. Here are some of those options: 1. If you can file a form 1040EZ, you can use the telephone to file your tax return. 2. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) offer *free* income tax preparation and help and many of these sites also offer *free* electronic filing. For the VITA site nearest you, contact the Taxpayer Education office at your local IRS office. FYI - the main IRS phone number is 1-800-829-1040 You may also contact the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to find out the nearest TCE/Tax-Aide site by calling: 1-888-227-7669. 3. Some banks and employers offer electronic filing. However, I am not aware of any specific banks or employers offering this service and do not know of any list of them... 4. Here is information about electronic filing of your tax returns: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/elec_svs/index.html http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/elec_svs/ets.html Here are the software programs recognized by the IRS to file tax returns online. http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/elec_svs/ol-txpyr.html#Soft 5. H & R Block and most major NON CPA income tax preparers offer electronic filing. Many of those businesses provide electronic filing for a fee even if they do not prepare your tax return. This is often a better option than buying a tax preparation program that will only be used once. 6. Even though the thought of filing your tax return online sounds appealing, I am not a big fan of this approach especially if you owe the IRS. If you will be receiving a refund you *might* get it a little earlier by filing electronically and having the check automatically deposited to your bank account. Note that you can also have your refund automatically deposited to your bank account without filing electronically... Remote reference. WHERE IS THE REFERENCE LIBRARIAN? What kind and level of service is the reference librarian giving? What knowledge and skills does a reference librarian need to provide quality and accurate service? How can reference librarians be sure they have appropriate and adequate real and digital tools to provide quality service? How can reference librarians and their institutions work collaboratively to provide quality service, across both the public and private sector spectrum? Should reference librarians cede some of their responsibilities to intelligent agents or other artificial intelligent technologies? Come to the Library of Congress to discuss these and related issues, with a focus on the real work being done by librarians in the trenches, whether in library reading rooms, classrooms, or remotely. By registering to attend, you will have the opportunity not only to listen to what some specialists are thinking and doing, but also an opportunity to offer your own perspective and suggestions during separate group discussions. This institute is sponsored and hosted by the Library of Congress, in cooperation with Library Solutions Institute of Berkeley, California. The answer is, "It depends." Many people select a college based on reputation, recommendations, or rankings in the press. But it is far more important to consider the issue of fit -- how well an institution of higher education suits the needs & goals of the student. The latest issue of The ERIC Review, "The Path to College," lays out a systematic approach to college selection, based on an understanding of the student & the range of institutional choices available. Unlike other college guides, this booklet... * provides critiques & suggestions for using guidebooks, focuses on electronic resources, & includes extensive references. * discusses research findings on college outcomes & the impact of different campus environments & allows different postsecondary sectors to describe factors to consider in planning for college. It is designed for prospective college students, as well as parents & guidance counselors, & it looks at... * various student populations, including adult students, women, first-generation students, & students with disabilities. * the range of postsecondary institutions available -- including community colleges, state universities, private liberal arts colleges, & tribal & historically black colleges & universities -- and what research suggests about the college experience at each type of institution. * innovations in higher education, including technology use, service learning, & learning communities. * how to use guidebooks, the Internet & campus visits to gather information & narrow choices. "The Path to College" is a result of a collaborative effort between ACCESS ERIC, the outreach component for the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), & the ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education. Excerpts from the overview are below. To request a free copy, contact ACCESS ERIC at 1-800-LET-ERIC (538-3742). Produced by ACCESS ERIC & the ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education (Fall 1997) ************************************************************* =================================== Starting Out on the Path to College =================================== Students who are considering the college path must first ask themselves, Should I go & why? Section 1 begins with "Why Get on the Path to College?" an article that will help you answer those questions. In keeping with the funnel metaphor, we then talk about the importance of staying open to many different choices as you begin college planning, in "Common Mistakes: Narrowing Your Choices Too Early." You can't begin to answer questions about which college might be right for you until you have analyzed your values, goals, & expectations for college. "Which Is the Right Path?" helps you begin your self-assessment. The final articles in this section address special issues that adult students, women, first-generation college students, & students with disabilities may wish to consider. ============================================== Gathering Information & Narrowing Your Choices ============================================== This section reviews options for college & summarizes changes in the learning environment on campuses today. We have invited representatives of diverse institution types, including state universities, community colleges, private liberal arts colleges, career colleges, & colleges & universities that serve special populations to describe the unique aspects of their schools. Reviewing their discussions of various institution types will help you become aware of the full range of postsecondary choices that are available to you. A unique addition in this section is "At the Fork in the Path: Some Guidance from the Research," a review of the existing research that examines how your college experience & outcomes could vary depending on the institution you choose to attend. And since colleges themselves are changing, we've included an article about some major innovations so that you can take advantage of programs that are of interest to you. ======================== College Planning Section ======================== Jim Montague's "Planning for College: Some Issues for Students & Parents To Consider" will help you plan your high school schedule & understand the college admission & financial aid processes. The article also includes information about how parents can begin saving for college expenses & a sidebar article about new tax credits & deductions for higher education. Two checklists from the U.S. Department of Education's Preparing Your Child for College accompany the article: a college preparation checklist for students & a financial preparation checklist for parents. ================ Making Decisions ================ Once you understand the range of postsecondary options available to you & how they may affect your college experience, you'll be ready to narrow your choices & begin making decisions. Section 3 discusses various decision- making tools & includes information about how to use college guidebooks, the Internet, & campus visits effectively. ============================== Succeeding on Your Chosen Path ============================== Finding success & happiness on your path to college requires having appropriate expectations, avoiding obstacles, & getting involved in the academic & social life of the college you select. Section 4 provides helpful hints about making the transition from high school to college & includes some candid advice from two college students in "Looking Back: Advice from Two Students on the Path." We include a brief discussion about resources for graduate school for those students whose paths extend beyond undergraduate education. ======= Library ======= College planning involves many more issues than we could ever fully describe in this compendium, so we've provided a sampling of print & electronic resources for further information.
