Internet Coach for Net Safety Tackles Web Dangers
Anyone traveling the Internet has hit some pothole along the way. Maybe
you’ve run into a virus or taken a detour to an unsavory site. Parents and
educators are particularly concerned about the dangers posed to young
travelers on the cyber highway. News stories about Internet scams and
pornographic chat rooms have raised the level of concern to a red hot level.
Recently an Internet/On-line Summit was held in Washington, D.C. to discuss
the issue of Internet safety. Much attention was given to filtering
software that can block unwanted sites from view. “Any parents who believe
that blocking software or technology is enough to protect a kid on-line are
kidding themselves,” said Barbara Yentzer, director of the National
Education Association’s Center for Education Technology. “You need to
educate them about what is expected from their behavior.”
Stepping into this fray is an old hand at Internet education, APTE, Inc. A
software publisher affiliated with Northwestern University, APTE has
released its newest CD-ROM, Internet Coach for Net Safety. This innovative
and imaginative program has content designed for both adults and children.
APTE, the first company to bring out a multimedia program for Internet
training, has again broken new ground by releasing the first multimedia
CD-ROM devoted exclusively to educating the public about Web dangers.
The adult section of Internet Coach for Net Safety has an engaging interface
that makes finding information easy for even first-time computer users.
Extensive information is given on avoiding common problems such as unwanted
mail, financial scams, downloading viruses, offensive sites and password
thefts. The program contains many valuable resources for classroom teachers
and parents, such as a list of important Web sites, a safety pledge,
information about Acceptable Use Policies (AUP), a test for Web safety
issues, and much more.
“Services that rate sites and filtering software are good starts, but they
do nothing to protect children against chat rooms and news groups. An ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of cure, which is why I am so keen on
programs, such as Internet Coach for Net Safety, that educate parents and
teachers on exactly how the Internet poses a threat to children.” says Linda
Johnson, Principal of Orrington School, Evanston, Illinois.
The children’s section of Internet Coach for Net Safety exemplifies the
power of computers as learning tools. Not just a list of do’s and don’ts,
the program uses a game, Pizza Panic, to engage the imagination and
intelligence of the child. This learning adventure challenges the player to
find a lost pet monkey. To make it easy for adults to discuss safety issues
with children, this CD-ROM also includes an annotated version of Pizza
Panic, called Pizza Panic Plus. Designed as an interactive guide, Pizza
Panic Plus helps adults relate the game to real dangers of the Web.
“There are on-line sites that give information on Web safety, but you have
to be connected to the Internet to use them. With the Internet Coach for
Net Safety CD-ROM, a user is prepared before he/she ever steps on the cyber
highway,” says Principal Johnson. “This is an ideal solution for
classrooms that have limited Internet access or wish to learn before going
on-line.”
Internet Coach for Net Safety CD-ROM lists for $28.95, and is available by
contacting APTE by telephone at: 800.494.1112 or by mail at: APTE, Inc.,
1840 Oak Avenue,
Suite 320-S, Evanston, Illinois 60201.

#Virtual Greetings Tackle Valentine's Day
Virtual Greetings Tackle Valentine's Day
By Pamela Wilfinger
Did you remember to buy your lover the perfect card for Valentine's Day?
You forgot? All the good ones are gone?
Help is here - in the form of virtual postcards, flowers and gifts available
for free on the Internet!
Some sites feature roses, some love poetry, others ice cream! All you need to
do is place your order on-line and your friends and family will be delighted
to find your feelings expressed in a "virtual" way.
Before you tackle the greeting sites, though, you should be prepared. Most
sites will ask for your name and e-mail address and the name and e-mail
address of your love, friend or family member. Yes, they must have Internet
access for this to work.
You should also open a notebook program or an e-mail and pre-write your love
missive before you jump onto these sites. This way, you'll know your message
will be spelled correctly and you won't tie up these sites for too long -
others may want to send a greeting too.
Then, you open your browser, put in the desired
structions are often pretty basic, but you will need a
forms-capable browser. Once you choose your greeting/flower/cigar/etc., and
add the necessary information, always view the selection before sending it, if
that option is available to you.
Most often, the greeting site will then create a web page with your message
and gift/flowers on it and send your love the information and URL. However
there are a few sites that will attach your greeting to an e-mail and then
forward it. Read all the instructions on the site to find out which is the
case. This is especially important if your love's Internet service provider
does not allow for attached files in e-mail.
That's it! Use the Internet to your advantage, and give a cyberhug to everyone
you know this Valentine's Day!

CyberPatrol Blocks Deja News
February 18, 1998 (INB) -- The Censorware Project, an
Internet activist group opposing the use of blocking software
on First Amendment grounds, today released its new report,
"CYBERPATROL AND DEJA NEWS: Censorware
Product Blocks an Important Research Resource", available
at http://www.spectacle.org/cwp/. In the report, the group
examines blocking of the Deja News Usenet archive
(http://www.dejanews.com) by CyberPatrol from
Microsystems Corp. (http://www.microsys.com).
Susan Getgood, the company's director of marketing for
CyberPatrol, recently announced that the product would
continue to blacklist Deja News due to the occurrence of
sexual speech on Usenet. (Deja News does not permit the
downloading of Usenet graphics.) In the report, The
Censorware Project presents the comments of numerous
Deja News users--lawyers, authors, law professors, public
relations consultants, editors and programmers--who use
the service to research disparate topics such as email
scams, software bugs, censorship and competitive business information.
"Deja News is a quick way to get information on many
important topics," said Jamie McCarthy, a Michigan
software developer who is the spokesperson for The
Censorware Project. "For example, we found that
developers use Deja News to get fixes for bugs and
solutions to programming problems. Many of them told us
that Deja News is a better place to find information than
the software vendors' own support pages."
McCarthy noted that CyberPatrol is installed in a number
of public libraries, including those in Austin, Texas and
Boston, Massachusetts. "Libraries are in the business of
distributing the kind of business, technical and current affairs
information people use Deja News for, not withholding it
from their patrons," McCarthy said. "In blocking Deja News,
CyberPatrol is again throwing out the baby with the bathwater,
just as it did when it blocked 1.4 million user pages at
members.tripod.com because of a few explicit pages."
The Censorware Project covered the blocking of Tripod in its
earlier report, "From Ada to Yoyo: Blacklisted by CyberPatrol,"
also at http://www.spectacle.org/cwp/.
"CyberPatrol does not belong in public libraries," McCarthy concluded.

Deaf students are free spirits on Internet
http://www.phillynews.com/inquirer/98/Feb/26/tech.life/SKUL26.htm
tech.k12 / Joyce Kasman Valenza
Several years ago, a group of my students, mostly boys, corresponded
by e-mail with a group of students in Australia, mostly girls.
Sure, it was an exciting cultural exchange, and part of the appeal
was certainly cross-gender. But what struck me most powerfully was
that no one was more interested in the exchange than David. For the
first time, David had a lengthy communication in which his deafness
was absolutely invisible.
"For the deaf, e-mail and chat [ rooms ] provide anonymity," says
Glenna Shire, a teacher of the deaf for the Montgomery County
Intermediate Unit. "My students can talk to people anywhere in the
world. In this environment, like no other, they are identified by who
they are, not what they are. They are finally offered the privilege
of having honest and true communication. E-mail and chat eliminate
the need for interpreters or third-person intervention. Conversations
can be truly personal."
Wissahickon School District is host to the deaf education program for
Montgomery County. I sat down with several of our students and asked
them why they were so enthusiastic about the Internet. Many deaf
students are feeling a sense of greater autonomy and self-reliance
with new options for communication that don't depend on the ability
to hear. The students' comments revealed the struggle they have
experienced with telephone communication.
"When I need to leave a message, I e-mail my father from school. I
don't have to bother with the relay and it saves me 25 cents," said
Liz Jensen, 17.
It is easy to take the task of leaving a message for granted if you
are a hearing person. For a deaf person, it is not easy to tell
whether the line is busy, whether there is an answering machine, or
exactly when the machine's beep comes on. "I could never leave a
message," said Nancy McAnlis, 17. "I don't know when the answering
machine picks up. I can't hear the beep, and if people are not
familiar with my voice they would not understand my message."
"E-mail lets users communicate with each other without worrying about
telephone tag, time zones, TTYs, voice interpreters," says Phil
Mackall, director of Pre-College Programs at Gallaudet University in
Washington, D.C., which serves the deaf and hard of hearing.
Before there was e-mail, the only distance communications option was
TTY. When deaf students talk to someone on the phone, it is usually
through a relay service. The exchange takes place through regular
telephone lines, but it can be frustrating and expensive and there is
always third-party intervention.
TTYs were a major communications breakthrough. But e-mail and chat
have created a kind of deaf global village.
There is an active deaf community on the Web. Web sites list events
of interest to the deaf. Many chat rooms and Internet Relay Chat
(IRC) channels have a deaf focus or exclusively deaf participants.
"I am constantly making new connections meeting deaf people all over
the world," said Liz Jensen. "We chat with both deaf and hearing
people," said Jen Sebzda, 16. "But most important, you get to talk to
people . . . and you don't have to go through all the complication of
not being understood and not understanding."
Deaf teens cannot spend the night chatting on the phone, but they can
enjoy the same social connection through the family modem line. The
students report they use chat because it is cheap, convenient, and
allows them to find community.
"The deaf community is so small and dispersed. In the chat rooms you
can talk to many deaf people at the same time. I had no idea there
were so many deaf people nearby," said McAnlis. She recommends the
print and electronic versions of the publication DeafNation, which
often list deaf chat rooms and IRC channels. There is a room in
America Online called "Deafteen" and a listing of deaf IRC channels
on Yahoo. "But you can just type in keyword 'deaf' and see what comes
up," says McAnlis. "We always try to find other deaf people by
looking up user profiles with the word deaf."
One problem the students described was how difficult it was for the
deaf to pick up new slang, words like phat, for instance. E-mail and
chat allow them to pick up important nuances in teenage language. "We
don't hear those words, so it takes awhile for us to pick up the
latest new expressions. Seeing them appear in a chat room allows us
to pick it up more quickly," said McAnlis.
Kathy Gentner is a teacher's assistant in the classroom for the deaf
at Wissahickon. Gentner, who is deaf herself, told me: "Chat has
provided a means for my whole family to communicate. We have a set
time to chat every Sunday because we are always busy. We have no time
to drive and see each other. It is the same with my deaf friends. For
the deaf, chat has lessened our need to use phones. My friend's
father died recently. When deaf people heard about it, they expressed
their sympathy through e-mail."
The Web has enabled the deaf to avoid a few other phone barriers. "I
don't have to go through the relay service anymore when I want to
order a pizza," said Jensen. "My local pizza store has a Web site
with an online ordering system. I order my pizza on the Web and drive
over to pick it up." The students in Glenna Shire and Carrie Bunch's
class enjoy the autonomy of using the Web to help with their
research. It is especially helpful as students investigate college
choices. Some are trying to identify colleges with deaf programs and
services such as note-takers and interpreters. This information was a
struggle to find before the Web. Most of the print college-selection
guides did not go into great detail; telephone calls were frustrating
and expensive.
"I use the Web to find out about deaf news," said Gentner. "For
instance, the Deaf Olympics was in Denmark this past summer. My
friend's brother was a coach for the women's team. On the Internet I
got updated news of wins and losses through Web sites like
DeafNation, Silent News, National Association for the Deaf, Gallaudet
University and other sites maintained by deaf colleges. I have
recommended its use to help others investigate job possibilities."
Any drawbacks? Shire said they are the same as for other young
people: "It is wonderful that my students are exploring their
interests independently, but some kids tend to get too hooked into it
and they believe everything that comes off the Internet has value.
They don't always evaluate" sources. But the biggest problem is that
"some of the kids who really need it don't have it." The students
noted another drawback. Multimedia features on Web sites and CD-ROMs
are inaccessible. Few audio/video segments are captioned, though they
may be essential to the understanding of a work.
E-mail and chat allow the deaf a new kind of freedom, addressing
issues of privacy and independence. Though all the students I spoke
with had only the most positive things to say about their
interpreters, they confided that having to have any third party
involved in every conversation can be an issue, especially for a
teenager. "I don't want to include an adult in all my business," said
one student. "E-mail eliminates that issue entirely. I can say
anything I want, without restrictions or inhibitions."
For the deaf, a communication gap is being closed. "I love e-mail and
chat," said Sebzda. "I meet a lot of people who have no idea that I
am deaf. On the Internet, they treat you like you are normal. All
they see is your words."

Newspaper article on Building Your Own Website, Part I (3/13/98)
Building Your Own Website, Part I
By Robin Nobles
A special thanks goes to Ray Humphreys for suggesting this article. Thanks
Ray! In order to do the topic justice, this article will be in two parts,
concluding next week.
You've been on the Internet for a while now, and you've visited
hundreds of websites--everyone else's websites. It's time to build
your own. But how? At best, it seems like a daunting task. The
reality, however, is that once you get the hang of it, it's great fun!
The first thing you need to do is visit a lot of sites. See how
everyone else does it. I don't mean *copy* what they're doing, but
analyze several sites and see what works. What annoys you at those
sites? What do you like? Make notes!
Plot out your site on paper. Think carefully about what you want on
each page and how the site will branch off from there. Make sure that
everything on your site can be accessed within three mouse clicks from
the main page.
You need a good HTML editor. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the
programming language of the World Wide Web, and a good editor will
convert regular word processing documents to HTML code. Word 97, a
popular word processing program, will also convert a document to HTML.
Word has an easy-to-use HTML editor with many templates, graphics, and
more. I highly recommend learning HTML with a simple editor. Once you
get the hang of it, you can always use a more advanced program.
Stroud's Consummate Internet Apps List offers several shareware HTML
editors that you can download and try to see if you like them. One
nice thing about Stroud's, other than its reliability, is that it
reviews all of the programs and lists their features. Stroud's rates
Hot Dog Pro as one of the best, if not the best, HTML editor on the
market.
http://cws.internet.com/
The best way to learn HTML is to just do it, and that what HTML
Testbed offers. You'll see the "source code" for an HTML page, and you
can type in whatever you choose, click on "Show Me," and it will
appear in an HTML browser, just like it would appear on the Web. This
is an excellent playground for new HTML learners, and I highly
recommend you spend some time there.
http://www.ash.udel.edu/ash/tutor/html/testbed.html
The Web Developer's Virtual Library offers almost anything you would
need to build your own website. Click on HTML for introductions to
HTML and web design. The site features graphics, CGI scripts,
information on animation, software, and more.

a little bit of humor goes a long way
I received this story and thought it great. I hope you enjoy!
How arrogant are we?
This purports to be the transcript of an ACTUAL radio conversation of a US
naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October,
1995.
Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95:
Americans:
Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.
Canadians;
Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans:
This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians:
No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans:
THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE
UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE
CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15
DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE-FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE
UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.
Canadians:
This is a lighthouse. Your call.
Have a great day:)

Newspaper article on Building Your Own Website, Part II (3/20/98)
(Continued from last week)
Okay, you have an HTML editor, you have plotted out your website, and
you've taken time to read a few tutorials on what to do. Simply fire
up that fancy editor, pick an appropriate template (which is simply a
skeleton of a page where you can enter in your own data), and play.
HTML editors have a very handy feature that allows you to preview the
page as you're working, so I recommend clicking on that preview button
often! This will show you how the page would look on the Web.
Once you've gotten your feet wet with HTML, you can begin to add other
things to your practice web pages, like graphics, buttons,
backgrounds, etc. Keep in mind that overloading your site with those
wonderfully cute graphics only makes the page load that much slower.
Visit How to Lose Your Web Viewers and learn that for every 10 seconds
it takes for your graphics to load before your page contents can be
seen, you risk losing 20 percent of your remaining viewers.
http://www.delphi.com/pubweb/gg2.html
An excellent spot to look for graphics is The Clip Art Connection,
where the graphics are divided into categories and themes, which makes
it much easier to find what you want.
http://www.ist.net/clipart/themespc.html
When building your site, save the main page (home page) as
"index.html." From there, name your other pages based on their
content. Be sure to provide a link from your main page to each of the
other pages.
You have your beginning site, so now you need to actually put your
masterpiece on the Web for the world to see. Many service providers
offer free website space as part of their monthly service. Check with
your Internet service provider to see if they provide free space and
exactly what you need to do to upload your site. If your service
provider doesn't offer free space, check with Geocities. Geocities
even provides a File Manager Utility program for creating a website.
http://www.geocities.com/
After you learn the procedures for uploading your site to the Web,
you'll need a good FTP program to upload the pages. Back at Stroud's,
search for CuteFTP, which is one of the best File Transfer Protocol
clients available on the market.
http://cws.internet.com/32ftp.html#cuteftp
Hopefully, this will get you off and running with your own website. Of
course, when building a site, there are many other considerations that
you will want to address later, such as the importance of META tags,
how to add CGI scripts for guestbooks/counters, how to use frames and
tables, and much more. But all of that comes with experience (and, in
my case, the help of a few very good friends!).
We'll close with an article titled, How to Publicize a Website by
Richard Seltzer, which outlines ways to promote your site.

"Unsinkable," The Full Story of RMS Titanic
http://www.stackpolebooks.com/unsinkable.htm
Titanic Fans, E-mail Your Questions to Author of "Unsinkable"
And Take Part in Online Poll at Launch of National Book Tour and Web Site
Titanic movie fans can e-mail their questions about the epic maritime
disaster to Daniel Allen Butler, author of "Unsinkable," The Full Story of
RMS Titanic, and participate in an online poll at the book's new Web site,
publisher Stackpole Books announced today at the start of a 44-city national
book tour.
Titanic followers are invited to visit the Web site at:
http://www.stackpolebooks.com/unsinkable.htm
to ask Butler their questions about the ship, the disaster, and what the
movie got wrong or missed. The author promises to respond to each e-mail.
Visitors also can record what they consider to be the worst mistake leading
to the disaster -- and whether they'd be willing to give up their seat in a
lifeboat for a spouse, or to let them stay behind, if their ship was
sinking. Poll results are instantly displayed, so participants can view
others' responses.
The book's site also features new findings, excerpts, Titanic photos, media
reviews, and the author's book signing and lecture schedule. The first 500
online buyers will get a first edition, first printing signed by the author
and free shipping within the United States or Canada through April 30.
"Unsinkable," is the most complete and up-to-date account ever published on
the disaster, with new findings on the events leading to its huge loss of
life. In its first week out in March, the book made UPI's bestseller list.
It went into a fourth printing today, and 100,000 copies are now in print.
Walter Lord, author of A Night to Remember, the 1954 classic account,
states: ‘Unsinkable' is "a masterful treatment of the Titanic disaster with
a new look at the role played by the mystery ship, Californian." Washington
Post writer Ken Ringle calls "Unsinkable" "superb." "Butler's is
unquestionably the best Titanic book since Lord's."
"Unsinkable" is being published several weeks before the 86th anniversary of
the Titanic's sinking (April 15). Butler, a researcher from Miami, FL, will
speak at the National Archives' commemorative program on the ship's sinking
on April 13th in Washington, DC.
The author will appear at book signing events from March through May in
Florida, Washington, DC, Virginia, New York City, Pennsylvania, Michigan,
Georgia, and California.
